In just a couple weeks I’ll be back in the states. I want to buy a book on textiles/crafts to bring back to Germany. Just one though – I don’t need too big a stash of books as getting them back again will become more difficult. I think I have the decision down to one of three. assuming I don’t keep looking to see if maybe there is one that’s a bit more perfect out there.
1) 5,000 Years of Textiles: I am a sucker for pictures of old textiles and information on how they were made. I like that it apparently covers the globe instead of just focusing on Egypt and/or Europe.
2) String, Felt, Thread: The Hierarchy of Art and Craft in American Art: This looks at how craft becomes (or is seen) as art, particularly in contemporary art.
3) Strange Material: Storytelling through Textiles: Like the 2nd one, this looks at how textiles are used in art, but with a specific focus on storytelling.
Which one should I get? Am I missing something even cooler out there?
Things I am not buying: Hedgehog Fibres’ Sorbet sock yarn. I am still resisting. Unfortunately, nobody else has bought it yet either so I can keep eyeing it. Fortuntately a) TheEnabler reminded me that my yarn gets used more when I have a project, and I can’t find a project for it (any ideas? Don’t tell me) and b) my MIL confirmed that my yarn shipment arrived at her house and will be waiting for me when I get to the states. So there is new yarn already in my future.
