We moved to Germany and suddenly there were future babies everywhere. By everywhere I mean three. But this is a lot of babies for my life to date. So in April TheEnabler and I took a critical trip to one of the local yarn stores, Tolle Wolle, in search of yarn.
Babies on the list: one colleague apiece + a best friend, AwesomeE. There was increased urgency as TheEnabler had the timing wrong and his colleague already had his baby! The other two babies were on track for the late July/early Aug time frame (for the math minded among you, you will realize that this means AwesomeE was already pregnant when she helped me pack).
I knew I wanted to do pants for AwesomeE’s tyke and TheEnabler requested a baby surprise jacket with striped for his friend. I stipulated that it be self striping. I did a baby surprise with stripes for a good friend a year ago, and knew that a colleague I’d met only a handful of times didn’t merit that many ends to weave in while we were also still apartment hunting in Potsdam. Note: I still massively underestimated how stressful this process (apartment hunting, not knitting) would be, I am thankful I just didn’t have dozens of yarn ends to add to the crazy.
We found adorable bright rainbow yarn for the surprise jacket and a pretty variegated for the baby pants. I just couldn’t decide what to do for my colleague though, so I figured I’d move forward with the projects I had, and maybe inspiration would strike.
Just 1.5 balls into the 3 I bought, the first surprise jacket was done! Yarn can seem like the Three Bears – too big, too small, ever in search of Just Right.
Here though, too much was actually just right! With my trusty scale I could see I had used exactly half the yarn, and I could make a second jacket.
And I think the baby pants look adorable.
Now all the new mums and dads have their baby clothing, so I can post about it 🙂
