Over the past week I’ve been working on a new pair of socks for my husband. The socks I made him four years ago are starting to look a bit worn, and he was admiring the Latvian Socks I was working on earlier this year.
I was slightly surprised that he wanted a pair, and exactly as written, because when I started Wandering Ithilien for my brother, he suggested they were too lacey for a guy. I countered that it was really pretty subtle, and my brother enjoys clothing with a bit of flair (my brother likes his socks).
Now I know what he was seeing – the pattern combined with the deep oranges and browns of the yarn he picked made him think of dragon scales. And the picot edge at the top, which I thought he might want changed, is part of the effect.
He declared that they will be his “Luck Dragon” socks.
