Or “I thought these would be faster”
I have started the kilt hose for TheEnabler. I’ve had two of the six balls of yarn wound for a while, and I finally sat down to do the swatching I needed to do before starting in on them. We picked out the various cable options together (staghorn and nupps were his choices). Then last week, I cast on the first cuff.
I think these are going to take a long time because I am just now starting in on the actual leg, having finally made it past the cuffs.
I am slightly surprised by this.
For no good reason. They are, afterall, freaking kilt hose, like the definition of insanely long hard socks. They are covered covered in cables. There is a turn down cuff with picot edges.
Why did I think these would somehow progress something more akin to a typical sock? I have no good answer.
Luckily, the yarn, Andorra by Kelbourne Woolens, is what can best be described as “scrumptious”. Its a merino/highland wool/mohair blend. The merino makes it bouncy and squishy (note: non fiber people don’t find “squishy” to be a positive term as evidenced by TheEnabler’s reaction) and helps the cables pop while the mohair adds a lovely shine and a bit of a halo. I’m also hoping the mohair/highland wool combo adds strength to the merino.
In case you were wondering, my husband will wear them. Back in the US has he a full wool kilt in his tartan, and here in Germany he has two “Utility Kilts” that he wears fairly regularly, much to the confusion and occasional merriment of the Germans around us.
