Arrival in the Land of Sheep

Before the plane had even touched down, we’d seen our first Welsh sheep dotting the hillsides of the fields outside Cardiff airport, an auspicious start to a trip centered around a wool festival.

We took the bus from the airport into Cardiff, had lunch at a chain called “Bill’s” (quite good – we recommend them), before picking up the bus from Cardiff to Brecon. Plenty more sheep were spotted on our way into Brecon, especially while passing through Brecon Beacons, the mountains and hills just south of Brecon.

But, I have no photographic proof because turns out reaction times are quite poor when you’ve been up since 2am local time (3am at home). Honestly, I’m impressed we managed the bus system as well as we did. I tried to do a bit of knitting along the way, but found myself nodding off half way through each round on my sock.

After a little nap at our hotel, we toddled down to get dinner. My knitting mojo picked up a bit and I was able to get a bit more done:

Saturday I wandered around town a bit, and bought myself four sheep. Well, chocolate sheep that is, in a lovely variety pack of colors:

TheEnabler and I have also been greatly appreciating our woolies since it’s rather chilly, rainy and windy. The sun comes out long enough to occasionally take off the chill and raise the spirits. But a nice wool sweater (or jumper to use the local lingo) and wool scarf is definitely helpful. Also, a good rain jacket. Yes, I know wool retains a good bit of its warmth when wet, but it is not wind proof.

We took a fun little boat cruise down the canal in Brecon, and here I present my first evidence of live sheep:

Lots and lots of sheep 🙂

We needed a good hot lunch after the boat trip, and found a lovely local place called “The Cafe”, where I enjoyed one of the other delights from sheep: cawl with lamb (basically, a lamb root veggie stew). It’s not just chocolate sheep I think are good for eating.  It was served with a bit of dry crumbly cheese which I think was sheeps cheese.

Now my bags are packed and ready for today’s festival; shopping list and tickets carefully stowed.
