My Tour de Fleece goals have been modest this year: finish the Pomegranate mohair (including plying) and spin at least 15min each day.
I met the first goal over the weekend in Amsterdam: 200+ yards of 2ply mohair in a color dubbed “Pomegranate”:
I bought the mohair back in 2014 from Unplanned Peacock, finally started spinning it 4years later last summer, and finished the project this month. Ok, so I still need to wash it. But I’m almost there. It’s not kid mohair, so it’s not the softest, but it does have the shine.
So far, I am also on track for the second goal: spin 15min each day. Spinning has somehow fallen a bit more by the wayside this past year. It’s not because I only have spindles and not my wheel – I’ve owned spindles far longer than my wheel and regularly spun every day for significant periods. I think it’s more that I have so many finished objects planned and in my head.
Also, this may be the negative side effect of hanging yarn on my walls: I am always aware that there is plenty of yarn to work with and there is a part of me that wants to clear out stash before making more stash.
In anycase, I have been getting spinning done, including on the canal boat, in train stations, in restaurants, at lunch, etc… Though the downside of spinning thin singles is that progress looks nonexistent even as you are in fact spinning yards and yards of yarn:
And when I work on it, I remember how much I enjoy spinning and need to ensure I make time for it. I like how using a spindle let’s me move and open up my arms (within an ergonomically sound range) instead of staying still, like knitting and crochet. I enjoy the magic of watching a handful of fibers and fluff turn into yarn, which has it’s own potential to become something else.
