Funny how that works…

I have a pair of socks I’ve been working on for a while.

You may remember I started them in May…

Beginning of a red and orange ribbed sock with ball of yarn, wooden needle holder and red project bag.

Somewhere over the summer I finished the first one so by the time I left for Shetland I was on the second one:

From upper left clockwise, deep teal top being spun on a Turkish style spindle, red ribbed socks in progress, pale multicolored top on a top whorl drop spindle, yellow lace knit shawl in progress

But let’s be honest – four months and not more than a sock and a half is hardly in line with my usual sock knitting, especially for one in which half the knitting is simple k2p2.

So Friday when I had some time on the train and no longer had the Dionne shawl to work on, I brought the socks along. The knitting belt and 40cm (16in) DPNs seemed a poor choice. Then I took it to the Sunday craft group meet-up: again, extra long pointy needles seemed a bad idea at what can become a crowded table.

Lo and behold: turns out progress really speeds up when I actually knit on a project. When I pulled these out on Friday I was only half way down the heel flap and now:

3/4th of a ribbed sock in red, orange and black yarn sitting on a red project bag on a red and cream couch cushion.

I only have half a foot left, and next weekend I have some serious plane knitting time as I fly back to the US. I think I can pack one less pair of socks to wear.

(I just jinked myself didn’t I? Guaranteed some weird knitting catastrophe?)
