This one really is different

I’ve started another new spinning project. And this time it really is different from my long term project to create the 3ply pomegranate yarn.

First, I’m using a batt which I purchased from Barn2Yarn earlier this year:

A still folded batt of bright yellow fiber is sitting on a wood deck chair.

As you can see, it has little bits of wool locks, and other fibers strewn in. So it’s not going to create a perfect smooth yarn all the way through anyway.

A batt of bright yellow fiber with white locks and some brown wool is unfolded and draped over a wooden deck chair.

I’ve decided to really shake up my spinning and go for a fluffy worsted single. Well, worsted should be the average as I plan to spin a little thick and thin. To help me out, I’m using my cross-arm spindle since it doesn’t spin as fast or long. This will help me keep the twist from getting too high. “Help” being the operative word – it’ll make me think twice about whether I should just wind on or flick again (as is habit now with the high twist fine singles I’ve been doing).

While this spinning is good for shaking up what I’m doing with my hands, its going to require more, not less, concentration since it’s outside my default zone for spinning both in terms of ingrained hand motions and natural inclination towards smooth thin perfection. Afterall, I knit far more with fingering to DK weight than anything heavier too!

Also, I’ve noticed kitty is more interested in this fiber than so of my others. I think the batt was floating temptingly in the breeze outside and smells sheepy.
