I continue to be delighted by my lovely bog oak spindle. Last week I reached the end of the first half of the rainbow gradient:
I just love how in the photo above you can see hints of the deep raspberry yarn peeking through the brilliant blue of the last color in the gradient. I finished that up mid-week last week, and was able to move on to the 2nd half of the fiber. I thought about beginning the chain plying with what I have, but I really want to line up all six turtles for a photo first. So I’ll do all the singles before plying anything.
I have to admit – I really love the contrast between the lighter colors and the dark of the wood:
The only challenge? I have to remember that I want to finish the spinning and not just sit around admiring how nice it all looks together*. Happily, it is a nice spindle. The sweet spot for this spindle seems to be after a few grams have been spun onto it. It stays pretty nice right up until around 30-32g of fiber are packed on. For the three turtles I’ve completed so far, I can tell I’m reaching the edges of where it shines as I spin up the last few grams. So I’m really glad I’ve split things 6 ways, and not just 4.
I also took a break from all the blue, and went back to spin a bit more of the lovely Charollais fiber where the tones switch around more rapidly for a bit more variety. I’m also spinning this thinner with a LOT of twist, so I can use it for socks.
*I also can’t leave it out and unattended or kitties put their noses in the bag to steal fiber.
