Flavors of Bright

I’ve been knocking out some spinning so far this week. My rainbow gradient is finished (well, aside from a wash), and I think it looks fabulously sunny and summery:

Niddy-noddy with a blue/raspberry/pink/orange/peach gradient on the left, and with a peach/brown/yellow/lime green/turquoise gradient on the right.

I still need to count up the yardage, but I think I’ve got somewhere between 400-500 yards total. At around 200g, this should be about a heavy worsted, but it looks more like a DK because I spun it worsted. So we’ll see once it’s had a bath… Here it is twisted into skeins:

Top skein is a blue/raspberry/pink/orange/peach gradient, and the bottom skein continues the gradient in peach/brown/yellow/lime green/turquoise.

One thing I will say is that it’s not going to win any softness awards. The Corriedale is a bit scratchy. Against, it might soften some once washed and all, but it’s never going to be the squishiest softest yarn. I’m not sure what it wants to be yet.

I’ve also been spinning away with my new supported spindle and the “Hysteria” colorway. I am completely in love with it. I delight in seeing the pops of color change continually. It also matches my spindle pretty darned well.

Undercover Otters black and neon rainbow fiber colorway “Hysteria” as a braid, some open fiber, a small skein of singles, and more singles being spun on a supported spindle.

As with my rainbow gradient, it is deliciously bright, but with a completely different vibe. There is a corner of my mind which is trying to whisper that I am too old for this sort of black and neon teal, purple, pink and yellow combination. That this is something reserved for angsty teens still “discovering themselves”. I am squashing this little voice mercilessly each time it comes up because I love this colorway. I have absolutely zero regrets about getting it.

I’m also happy I committed to just spinning this as singles, as I would be sad to marl the colors further. I’m almost sad to spin up such beautiful braids. Let me tell you though, my much more limited experience with supported spindles shows. It’s been a while since I had so much trouble controlling my twist and thickness, and trying to keep my yarn from drifting apart. It’s getting better, but I’m also rather glad I have 200g of this fiber to get some proper practice in.

I am also relieved to say that the heat wave broke. We are back to enjoying chilly evenings and morning, and this means my kitty will cuddle with me again at night.
