I’d planned to do an update on how my trip to sleeve-island is going (better), but then the cat wanted many snuggles. And for the sake of household peace I could not deny her this thing.
So behold instead, a lovely cop of yarn I finished plying earlier this year:
I started this (checks Rav notes) in May 2020. So…. I finished it in less than 4yrs. My intent is to knit myself some socks with it, so it’s done in a fairly high twist 3ply yarn. The Charollais let me spin both quite fine and very high twist singles. It just soaked up twist.
I spun it on a spindle from Cynthia Wood Spinner. I can get the spindle going quite fast using a thigh roll. I used an Andean spindle from Abby’s Yarns1 for the plying and palm rolling to get that going quickly. One thing I’ve learned makes plying less unpleasant for me is to wind a plying ball first of my singles. Then I get all the stupid tangles and twist shenanigans done in a single session. The plying itself goes much more smoothly and I can do it a few minutes here or there just as I spin my singles. Does it make me love plying? No. But it means I actually do the plying.
I still need to wind the 2nd half into a skein to get my final yardage, but I think I’ll have somewhere around 350yds. This should be enough for socks, and I may try a toe-up and two-at-a-time method to ensure that I use every inch I can but don’t fall short.
- psst…. they are putting up new spindles soon. Please buy so I don’t because I have a flower vase full already ↩︎
Gorgeous. Lucky feet! 😊 Also, total props to you for actually tearing out that sleeve and restarting it!
